Studio Last

February 2019

We chat with CD / CEO Matthias Last of Studio Last about some recent client struggles that taught him about invoicing in steps, how as a studio they aim to stick to the old adage 'form follows function', plus Matthias shares his thoughts on where design is heading in the next five years.

Where did you study and what were some of your first jobs?

I grew up in Eastern Germany, where all the cultural in- and output was controlled by the government and I became aware very early on of the subtle ways an idea or a message is transported by its design. After the fall of the wall, I moved to Hamburg where I also studied Graphic Design. My first design job was to create flyers and wall newspapers for a student group, trying to develop an equally radical design for their alternative political views. But then I moved quickly on to pop culture and started to create record covers for local new-wave bands.

What's the worst design job you’ve ever had and how does that make you a better designer?

Recently we worked with a client who wanted us to design a new CI for an event location in Berlin. After several meetings and completed work on our part, it turned out that their payment attitude wasn’t the best. Through this experience we learnt a lot about invoicing our work in different steps, especially when it comes to new customers, we have not worked with before.

Give us the elevator pitch on what you do.

At Studio Last form follows function. With a sharp focus on details and materials, we specialize in developing, relaunching and redesigning media – from high-circulation print publications to online platforms and visual identities – inventing and reviving them with a cutting edge, sleek elegance, and a hint of the unexpected.

"

It’s more important that a graduate is curious, motivated, and open to new things rather than already having developed their own style.

"

What qualities and skills to you look for in a graduate?

Openness, curiosity, passion. It’s more important that a graduate is curious, motivated, and open to new things rather than already having developed their own style. This can be found and encouraged through the course of their career…

… and interests in both fields print and online.

What's the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Keep it simple.

Any passion projects/collabs you would like to share?

Beside our Design Studio we also operate Blake & Vargas, a Showroom for Contemporary Culture. One of our latest projects is “HEAVY DUTY” a collaboration with Gruppemagazine and the Standardclothing. Together, we have created a limited edition carrier bag that combines design, art and fashion - what is also the concept behind Blake & Vargas.

Also we are in the last steps of relaunching the new Website for an Art-Magazine we love.

Who’s on the team, what are their roles and why do you love them?

Matthias Last CEO / CD

Sarah Bernauer, part of the SL Team, CEO together we run the gallery Blake & Vargas

Mikel Kanne, Grafiker, AD

Again Openness, curiosity, passion!

Where do you think design is heading in the next five years and how will you adapt?

We think that design will become again more relevant in terms of creating content, socially and politically, rather than focusing on the surface of things. In times where everyone has access to creative tools that produce quick and nice looking results, the importance of experience and unique approaches will be more crucial.

  • We love jobs! And so does our audience. Because our following is mostly students and graduates, the best jobs to advertise are for junior and mid weight roles. Specially graphic design, digital design, typography and illustration. Please note these are paid full time or part time roles, so if you have a one off project to advertise, put it under our Freelance jobs dropdown instead. Thanks!

  • Welcome to our new section for freelance one-off jobs! To keep things simple, we want to connect you with the talent by advertising what you need, and encouraging people to email you directly with an example of their work. You can choose who to work with from all the submissions you receive. Everything is done online, and you can expect a designer to be dealing with you remotely. The good news is you won’t be limited to talent locally - this is advertised in each of our cities, meaning you will get a much higher standard of work to choose from. Picking a budget is very hard - we do not encourage work for a fiver like some websites, because you will end up with something worth a fiver!

Our community is full of the best emerging talent, and a average price should be around half of that of a professional. Our community is full of the best talent, and a average price should be around $65 p/h.
