Hiroyuki Ishii

October 2018

Hiroyuki Ishii drew us in with his simple but surrealist illustration style. Loving his use of line and colour we had to hear more! Check out what Hrioyuki has to share about how he got started, some disasters he's faced and developing his style.

When did you fall in love with design and how did you get started?

I fell in love with illustration after I became illustrator. I wasn't really serious about illustration back then, but when I got started I wanted to think about what is illustration more and more.

What does a typical working day include for you right now?

Wake up in the after noon. Because of the World Cup. Check mails and if I have illustrations to do, I'll do it. If I don't, I go back to sleep or do something different.

How did you develop your style as an illustrator and what tips would you have for others?

I'm still learning, but I like to develop old style line drawn illustration. Line drawing has lot of potential and flexibility. I like the idea of being flexible. You can use the line in many ways.

What have been some of your biggest disasters and how have you learnt from it?

I had many misunderstandings with designers / art directors, in many projects. Even still now. It's all about miss communication. Exchange your thoughts in every step as the project goes. Tell and share your thoughts and the way you feel with respect.

What career advice would you give your 16yr old self?

I would say to myself, make the environment around you. Make your surroundings with something or someone that you like, that you want to be deeply.

What advice would you give students starting out?

Try to learn by copying the styles of designers or illustrators that you like. Then think about which part of it is you like or you don't like. Copying style makes much faster to skips few steps at studying process.

Our community is full of the best emerging talent, and a average price should be around half of that of a professional. Our community is full of the best talent, and a average price should be around $65 p/h.
